An overflow audience filled the Mary Winspear meeting room at PROW’s 2024 AGM on Tuesday April 9th. More than 120 people came to learn about new provincial regulations that could impact waterfront properties. Special guest speakers – Denise Brynelson, Dal Brynelson and Corey Johnston – are driving forces behind the Waterfront Protection Coalition and brought us up to speed on their efforts since the group was formed last December.
There was a sense of shock and disbelief in the room, as the extent of the provincial government’s Dock Management Plan and the proposed BC Land Act amendments became clear. These legislative changes would be devastating for real estate values for residential waterfront owners and would affect yacht clubs, marinas, ports – virtually every aspect of BC’s maritime economy would be impacted. Consultation with the province is now taking place, and the Waterfront Protection Coalition does have a seat at the table. There is still time to make a difference – and when it comes to pre-election decision-making, there is strength in numbers.

Make YOUR voice heard on the Official Community Plan
Closer to home, work is now going ahead on the new North Saanich Official Community Plan which will also have consequential impacts on waterfront properties. We were pleased that Mayor Jones and Councillors McClintock, McConkey, Marshall, Shrivastava and Stock attended the AGM (Councillor DiBattista was unavoidably delayed and sent regrets). Mayor Jones spoke about the importance of hearing from waterfront owners during the upcoming consultation phase, and encouraged everyone to attend the upcoming Open House as an opportunity to make our priorities known.
